Fifty years ago, Dr. Dustin Heuston had a bold idea: what if technology could help every child access a great early education? In 1976, that vision was ahead of its time. Today, it’s the foundation of Waterford.org. What began as pioneering research at Brigham Young University grew into a national nonprofit dedicated to one enduring belief: every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Long before educational technology became commonplace, Dr. Heuston and his team were exploring how adaptive learning, storytelling, music, and research-based instruction could open doors for young learners. Five decades later, that vision is reaching children and families across the country.

A Legacy Measured in Lives Changed

The story of Waterford isn’t told only through years or milestones. It’s told through the children who discovered the joy of reading, the families who found confidence supporting learning at home, and the educators who gained tools to help every student succeed. Across five decades, Waterford programs have helped hundreds of thousands of children build critical early learning skills, especially in communities where access has been limited. The results are measurable. Research continues to show positive gains in reading, math and science outcomes. But the most meaningful impact happens beyond the data. It’s the kindergartner who arrives at school ready to learn. The parent who realizes they can be their child’s first and most important teacher. The educator who sees a struggling student gain confidence and momentum.

Honoring the Past, Building the Future

As Waterford celebrates its 50th anniversary, we’re reflecting on the vision that started it all while looking ahead to what’s possible next. Through Waterford Early Learning, Waterford Upstart, ongoing  research, and new initiatives to expand access, we remain committed to helping more children create a strong start to their educational journey. This anniversary year we will shine a spotlight on the people who have made that work possible: the families, educators, partners, donors, and communities who have believed in the power of early learning and invested in children’s futures. Together, they have shaped Waterford’s story.

The Next 50 Years Start Now

Anniversaries are a chance to celebrate achievements, but they are also a reminder that there is still important work to do. As we look to the future, our commitment remains unchanged: expanding opportunity, increasing access, and ensuring more children have the chance to reach their full potential.

Because when children get the right start, everything that follows becomes possible.
