Dr. Sean Alford has 27 years of experience in education, including work as a Teacher, Administrative Assistant, Assistant Principal, Student Services Supervisor, Student Services Director, Principal, Chief Instructional Services Officer, and District Superintendent. 

Dr. Alford was named Superintendent of Aiken County schools in August of 2015. He has made deliberate efforts to engage all community members and lead the District on a path forward to being the premier school district in South Carolina. During his tenure, the District has refocused its efforts on literacy, lead an InnoVision-award nominated community workforce development collaborative, garnered community support for a number of accelerated programs, including a partnership with the National Math + Science Initiative, and cultivated a collaborative culture among the more than 3,400 staff members and teachers across 42 schools. 

Just a few of the District’s many accomplishments under Dr. Alford’s leadership include an increase in the Aiken County on-time graduation rate to a district-first of 89%, successful education to the greater community for a $90 million dollar School Bond Referendum, the first successful bond referendum in support of education in the community of Aiken in 47 years. Dr. Alford has also partnered with community businesses and encouraged donations of time, talent and financial resources totaling more than $800,000 in donations for District educational programs. 

Under Dr. Alford’s leadership, Aiken County Public Schools is on a Path to Premier. The first South Carolina school report cards to utilize more stringent federal performance criteria show the District with four schools achieving Excellent ratings, and 17 schools earning a rating of Excellent or Good. Among those with an Excellent grade is New Ellenton Middle STEAM Magnet School, the first District middle school to earn a report card rating of Excllent since 2012. A.L. Corbett Middle and North Aiken Elementary earned ratings of Good and are the first for the schools in 13 years, despite enhanced state and national expectations. 

Prior to working with Aiken County Public School District, Dr. Alford served as an Assistant Superintendent in Dorchester School District Two, where he directed instruction and technology for twenty-two schools with 25,000 students and more than 1,500 teachers and staff. That district saw double-digit gains in graduation rates under his leadership. 

In a previous role as Beaufort County’s Chief Instructional Services Officer, seven schools achieved Excellent report card ratings; none received the top rating before his direction and supervision. 

Dr. Alford is a graduate of The Citadel where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. He earned a Master of Science in Educational Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, an Education Specialist in Educations Leadership and Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership at the University of South Carolina.
