Support Options for Waterford UPSTART

Because you live in Utah, you can choose either our Full Support Option and our Digital Support Option. This page describes these two options so you can decide which is right for your family.

Why Choose the Full Support Option?
The Full Support Option is our standard program. You should choose the Full Support Option if:

  • You don’t have a computer or Internet access
  • You want the benefits of in-person training, assessment, and graduation
  • You’ll welcome weekly communication from Waterford UPSTART in email, phone calls, and texts
  • You value the support of a personal Family Education Liaison to offer coaching, feedback, motivational strategies, etc.

You can read more about the specifics of the Full Support Option below.

Why Choose the Digital Support Option?
If you choose the Digital Support Option, you’ll have full access to the learning software but will not have a specific Family Education Liaison assigned to your child for support.

You should choose the Digital Support Option if:

  • You have Internet access and a computer your child can use for the program
  • You don’t want in-person family educational support
  • You are comfortable with online, digital training and assessments
  • You don’t want to attend an in-person graduation
  • You want limited communication from Waterford UPSTART

You can read more about the specifics of the Digital Support Option below.

What is a Family Education Liaison?

As part of the Full Support Option, a Family Education Liaison (FEL) is assigned to support you and your child through the program. As a single point of contact with Waterford UPSTART, your FEL will monitor your child’s progress and provide motivational strategies, literacy coaching, and personalized recommendations. If you select the Digital Support Option, an FEL will not be assigned to your family.

What is the Full Support Option?

The Full Support option is our standard program. It includes:

  • In-person training for you and pre-test for your child before you start the program
  • Personal support and communication from a Family Education Liaison
  • Weekly communication from Waterford, including emails, phone calls, and texts
  • Reports on your child’s progress, which you access online or through our mobile app
  • Monthly achievement medals in the mail
  • In-person graduation event and post-test when your child completes the program

Note: Qualifying families may receive a computer and Internet access to complete the program, if needed. If you need financial help with a computer or Internet access to complete the program, please choose the Full Support option.

What is the Digital Support Option?

Digital Support participants have limited communication and support from Waterford.org. You have full access to the learning software but do not have a specific Family Education Liaison assigned to support your child, and you will not attend in-person trainings or graduations.

The Digital Support option includes:

  • Digital training (by video) you’ll watch the week of September 9
  • Program start on September 16
  • Access to the online pre-test and post-test at home
  • Reports on your child’s progress, which you access online
  • A certificate of graduation

Note: The Utah State Legislature required us to divide Digital Support participants into two subgroups this year. If you choose Digital Support, you’ll be sorted into one of two tiers based on data the state wants to evaluate. You won’t be able to choose which tier you’re assigned. The two tiers function the nearly the same, so you won’t notice much difference on your end.

Depending on the tier you’re assigned, you may receive weekly emails with family learning activities and suggestions that support what your child is learning in the program. You may also have access to our mobile app (Waterford Mentor) with progress reports and parent resources. However, those same reports and resources are available online to all parents in any support option.

See the comparison chart for more details.

What if I need Technical Support?

You should first reach out to your Family Education Liaison (FEL). If needed, they can transfer you to our technical support team. If you don’t have an FEL (because you registered for the Digital Support Option), you have several avenues for support:

If you’ve registered for the Full Support option, you should first reach out to your Family Education Liaison. If needed, they can transfer you to our technical support team.

Can I change options or tiers?
At this time we are unable to move you to a different support option or tier once you’ve started the program. This has to do with strict guidelines determined by the Utah State Board of Education.
