UPSTART Program Evaluation, Year 3

Overall, UPSTART achieved large impacts on improving the phonological awareness skills of participants in Year 3 of the program. Treatment group effects were observed across all three of the phonological awareness domains measured by the Bader: the ability to recognize rhymes; the ability to blend phonemes; and the ability to segment phonemes.

UPSTART Program Evaluation, Year 4

The control group children scored significantly higher on the overall Brigance at pretest compared to the UPSTART treatment group children. The average Brigance pretest difference was over 16 points. But posttest results showed that the UPSTART treatment group had closed the gap and, in fact, performed significantly better than the control children.

UPSTART Program Evaluation, Year 5

The evaluation of UPSTART’s fifth year of implementation used a pretest-posttest control group design to assess the program’s impact on developing the children’s early literacy skills in preschool. The vast majority (70%) of the 1,577 preschool children who enrolled in the fifth year of UPSTART were from low income families.

Waterford Longitudinal Data: Lasting Results for Students

Children who used Waterford the year before kindergarten saw immediate positive gains and were still outperforming state averages on standardized tests in grades first through fourth.

UPSTART Program Evaluation, Year 6

The UPSTART program shows continued success at helping preschool age children develop literacy skills and prepare for school. Findings suggest that these outcomes would have specific benefits to at-risk children, whose families struggle with poverty and other issues, and often lack the resources to help their children develop the literacy skills needed to succeed in school.
