What Children are Saying About...

READING

The caterpillar taught me the letter C The letter C came up on the screen. At first, Tyler looked a little perplexed. The teacher noticed and asked Tyler, “Would you like help making a letter C?”

Tyler responded with a definite no. He went on to say, “I already know how because the caterpillar taught me. Watch, Teacher.” The teacher watched as Tyler wrote a C. “Wow! Good for you, Tyler. You can do that all by yourself!”

“Yes, I can,” he said proudly. Then Tyler looked up at the teacher with questioning eyes, “Now, do you think you can make the letter C?” The teacher assured him she would do her best but might need a little help.

I know 22 letters! All of a sudden a big “Whew-wee!” came from the corner of the room. The teacher looked to see Annie breathing heavily, as if she just finished a race. Annie then told all the children around her, “I know 22 letters! I really had to hurry!”

Sounded out sat Callie was sounding out the word sat. First she said sss. Then she said saaa. Finally she said sat. After saying sat she rhymed it with mat, cat, and bat—all the time feeling very proud of herself.

MATH

There are four corners in a room While eating lunch with her mom, Kayla said, “Mom, there are four corners in this room.”

Her mom was shocked. She asked, “What else do you know?”

Kayla continued to tell her mother there are three corners on every triangle.

Just keep on doing fun stuff While working on a matching exercise in Level Onemath, Jacob said with excitement, “I just keep on doing fun stuff!”

I made a 2 all by myself The software encourages the children to use their pencil and paper to reproduce the letter or numeral shown on the screen.

Jessica proudly held up her paper and shouted, “Look, I made a 2 all by myself!”

SCIENCE

Rock melts! When the science software taught Joanna all about volcanoes, she was without question completely engaged. As soon as the volcano instruction was over, Joanna turned in slow motion—you could see her eyes move from object to object—until her eyes met the teachers eyes’ and she exclaimed with utter bewilderment, “Rock melts!”

Rabbits and cats are mammals At breakfast, Ann told her mom, “Mom, rabbits and cats are mammals.”

Surprised, her mom queried, “They are?”

“Yes, because mammals have hair and milk for their babies.”

“They do? Where did you learn that?”

“From computer class.”

Take me right back Kyle was fascinated with the experiment that shows a chicken developing from an egg. One day he didn’t get to see his egg on the program. He was so upset he cried all the way home. In the car he told his mother, “You take me right back so I can get on the computer, and you can do what ever you do until I get done with my egg!”

We have bumps all over our tongues called taste buds John went home and told his mom, “Mom, we have bumps on our tongue!”

“Bumps?” his mom inquired.

“Yes, we have bumps all over our tongues. They are called taste buds.”

“Where did you learn that?”

“I learned it from computer class!” John responded proudly.
