Assessment Approach
As with all computer-adaptive testing based on Item Response Theory (IRT), the computer-adaptive sequencing in Waterford Assessments of Core Skills™ (WACS) avoids floor and ceiling effects. Rather than simply identifying that a student is “at-risk” or “above benchmark” on a predetermined set of assessments, WACS reports both a student grade-level performance and a nationally-normed scale performance. As a student answers items correctly within a content area, the difficulty level of subsequent items will increase. Conversely, if a student fails to answer items correctly, the student will receive less difficult items to determine where more instruction and practice is needed.

WACS is designed specifically to be a fun experience for very young students. Simple navigation, clear audio prompts, and careful pacing ensure young students’ success. Wyatt, the host of WACS, models each challenge and keeps children motivated with lively transitions. Because the test adapts to the student’s input, a significant level of detailed information can be gleaned in just one testing session, reducing the time and stress associated with multiple testing sessions.
Easy to Administer
WACS saves considerable time and money over one-to-one student assessments. It requires minimal training and minimal time to administer. All delivery and scoring is automatic, with reports available immediately after students complete the assessment.

WACS is Web-based, using Adobe AIR® to allow for rich media delivery in bandwidth-constrained schools and school districts.
