Assessment Approach

Computer-adaptive Testing based on Item Response Theory (IRT), computer-adaptive sequencing in Waterford Assessments or Core Skills™ (WACS) avoids floor and ceiling effects. Rather than simply identifying that a student is “at-risk” or “above benchmark” on a predetermined set of assessments, WACS reports student grade-level performance on a nationally norming scale. As a student answers items correctly within a content area, the item's difficulty level will increase. If a student fails to answer item correctly, the student will receive less difficult items to determine where more instruction and practice is needed.

Quality of Experience

WACS is designed specifically to be a fun experience for very young student. Simple navigation, clear audio prompts, and careful pacing ensure young students’ success. Wyatt, the 3D animated sheriff, models each challenge and keeps children motivated with lively transitions. Because the test adapts to the student’s input, a significant level of detailed information can be gleaned in one testing session, reducing the time and stress associated with multiple testing sessions.

Easy to Administer

WACS saves considerable time and money over one-to-one student assessment. It requires minimal training and minimal time to administer. All delivery and scoring is automatic, with reports available immediately after students complete the assessment.

Easy to Deploy

WACS is Web-based, using Adobe AIR® to allow for rich media delivery in bandwidth-constrained
