Learning Approach

Research has demonstrated that the elements of an effective reading intervention include

  1. Focus on phonemic awareness and the basic elements of language
  2. Use of multisensory approaches to help improve visual and auditory memory
  3. Direct, systematic, explicit, and repetitive instruction

Camp Consonant™ includes all of these components. By integrating multisensory visual, auditory, tactile, and kinesthetic elements into every lesson, Camp Consonantretrains the struggling reader’s brain in a way that’s enjoyable for young learners.

The interface features Beatrice and Buddy Beaver, who guide learners in a fun camp environment where they learn strategies to become independent readers. Awards, achievement recognition, and feedback motivate students and keep them engaged with the program.

Camp Consonant reinforces classroom instruction and individualized education programs (IEPs). Teachers construct individualized learning sequences for students, based on areas of need. Students then access assignments anywhere the Internet is available—including from home.

Detailed reports are easy to view and print in Camp Consonant. Teachers can monitor access to the program, the amount of time a student spends on each activity, response time, and correct and incorrect responses. They can use the reports to gauge progress, reinforce instruction with additional material where necessary, and effectively make additional assignments in the Camp Consonant program, enhancing classroom instruction, small group tutoring, and individual tutoring for struggling readers and multi-sensory learners.
