Description
Waterford is looking for an experienced DBA who loves a challenge and can work in a dynamic and still developing environment. You must be able to collaboratively work with others across multiple departments to come up with a best solution to problems and issues that will work best for all data consumer types (from the developer to the QA department as well as the customer).
The Database Administrator’s role is to design, install, monitor, maintain, and performance tune production databases while ensuring high levels of data availability. This individual is also responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing database policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of databases and their accompanying software.
The successful candidate will have CLI experience with production database backends including MS SQL on Windows Server platforms as well as Postgres and/or MySQL on Linux platforms. This candidate should have experience with SSIS and ETL concepts.
We are looking for long-term solutions to build scalable high-performance systems on a non-profit budget. This position reports to the Director of IT within the IT department and works closely with the programming department.
Note: Candidates will be pre-screened via a 10 to 20 minute conference call for basic knowledge and skills prior to being brought in for an interview.
Responsibilities
Strategy & Planning
- Work across departments to assess and develop long-term strategic goals for production databases.
- Work with developers and DB Architects to create database systems and quality assurance policies and procedures.
- Design and implement redundant systems, policies, disaster recovery and data archiving procedures for data protection and integrity.
- Work with IT staff to design, setup and configure high performance database systems.
- Research and implement data access methods for developer and QA staff while maintaining the stability, performance and security of database systems.
Operational Management
- Install and configure database systems with a focus on performance, reliability, consistency and data integrity.
- Respond to and resolve database access and performance issues.
- Monitor database system details within the databases. Look for ways to make improvements.
- Monitor, optimize and allocate physical data storage for database systems.
- Plan and coordinate data migrations between systems.
- Develop, implement, and maintain change control and testing processes for modifications to databases.
- Create, or support creation of, required reports in response to business user needs.
- Perform database transaction and security audits.
- Establish appropriate end-user database access control levels.
- Develop routines for end-users to facilitate best practices database use.
- Perform database backups and restoration as needed.
Requirements
- Associate or Bachelor degree in computer science w/ emphasis on databases
- PostgreSQL on a Unix/Linux platform in a production environment preferred
- 3+ years experience with SQL databases (specifically MS SQL 2005, 2008)
- SSIS Administration experience
- Certifications in MS SQL 2005 or 2008 highly desired.

- Strong understanding of the MS Windows Server platform
- Strong working knowledge of Linux and open source tools and BASH
- Working technical experience with designing, building, installing, configuring and supporting database servers.
- Hands-on database tuning and troubleshooting experience including the use of CLI commands and methods.
- Knowledge of applicable data privacy practices and laws particularly as it applies to child privacy and protection.
- Good written and oral communication skills with the ability to present ideas in a user-friendly way without the consistent use of TLA’s
- Strong technical documentation skills.
