Community Center Teacher
Job Summary
The Waterford Community Center Teacher teaches children basic reading and math skills, helps young children using the computers, maintains the lab and necessary supplies, documents student information, and assists in recruiting. This position requires familiarity with computers as well as flexibility and a willingness to accommodate changing priorities.
Essential Functions
- Coordinate work in the Waterford Community Learning Center: teach children math and reading skills using different methods, perform general upkeep of the lab, troubleshoot basic computer problems, monitor student information and monitor progress, etc.
- Provide additional coordinating support as needed

Content Designer—Reading
Waterford Research Institute™ is a nonprofit, robust multimedia company that develops interactive games, songs, and books to teach young children reading, math, and science skills. Talented sound designers, illustrators, concept artists, video artists, animators (3-D and traditional), programmers, educational designers, writers, and graphic designers combine to create products that captivate and teach young audiences. Waterford Institute is currently searching for a Reading Designer to research and develop educational courseware.
Description
- Understand the latest scientific research and standards in the area of early reading
- Design research- and standards-based content for early reading curriculum
- Define a developmental sequence of learning objectives
- Develop a thorough understanding of existing Waterford courseware and teacher materials
- Assess improvement needs for Waterford programs
- Interact closely with a production team to ensure effective teaching methods
Requirements
- Knowledge of the current scientific reading research in the areas of phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, text comprehension, and fluency
- Understand the current national and state education standards for reading
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with a production team
- Understand computer technology and software as an effective tool for instruction
- Ability to design developmental curricula
- Bachelor’s degree in education
- Minimum two years’ teaching experience, preferably with elementary-school-age children

Desktop Technician
The Desktop Technician’s role is to provide a single point of contact for end-users to receive support and maintenance within the organization’s desktop computing environment. This includes installing, diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and upgrading all PC hardware and equipment to ensure optimal workstation performance. The person will also troubleshoot problem areas (in person, by telephone, or via e-mail) in a timely and accurate fashion and provide end-user assistance where required. This person's primary duty will be to assist the Chairman of the Board with his technology needs. Other duties will also be assigned. The candidate will need to be on call nights and weekends when needed. Occasional travel will be necessary.
Responsibilities
- Learn Chairman's multiple environments and keep them fully functional and in sync
- Help with technical questions and in learning new software
- Have excellent knowledge of MS Office 2003/2007 (particularly Word and PowerPoint) and Adobe Photoshop
- Install, configure, test, maintain, monitor, and troubleshoot end-user workstations and related hardware and software in order to deliver required desktop service levels
- Assess the need for and implement performance upgrades to PC boxes, including the installation of CPUs, I/O and NIC cards, ribbon cables, hard drives, RAM, CD-ROMs, etc.
- Collaborate with LAN technicians/network administrators to ensure efficient operation of the company’s desktop computing environment
- Where required, administer and resolve issues with associated end-user workstation networking software products
- Receive and respond to incoming calls, pages, and/or e-mails regarding desktop problems
- Ensure that physical desktop connections (network cabling) are in proper working order
- Accurately document instances of desktop equipment or component failure, repair, installation, and removal
- If necessary, work with third-party support and PC equipment vendors
- Conduct research on desktop products in support of PC procurement and development efforts
- Evaluate and recommend products for purchase
- Assist in laying and repairing network cable from end-user workstations to the servers
Requirements
- Excellent written and verbal English skills
- Outgoing personality with excellent ability to explain complex issues in a simplified way without talking down to the end-user
- Excellent technical knowledge of PC, desktop hardware, MS Windows XP Pro
- Ability to present ideas in user-friendly language
- Analytical and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail
- Self motivated and directed with the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment
- Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
- Strong customer-service orientation
- Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience
- Technical knowledge of network switches and end-user networking issues
- Working technical knowledge of current protocols, operating systems, standards and common desktop software
Preferences
- 2 year degree/diploma in the field of computer science
- 2+ years equivalent work experience
- Certifications in MS Windows preferred
- MAC experience preferred

Interaction Designer

Waterford Institute is currently searching for an Interaction Designer to research and develop educational courseware. This unique full-time position requires a strong understanding of designing games/activities, user interfaces, and navigation schemes for young children. The Interaction Designer will work closely with other interaction designers, educational content designers, graphic artists, sound designers, programmers, the evaluation/usability team, and children to design and prototype projects.
Requirements
- A degree in interaction design, game design, education, psychology, or a technology-related field
- Experience developing interactive products (with emphasis on user-centered design principles for children)
- Advanced knowledge of a variety of HCI & multimedia concepts, practices, and procedures
- Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Proven experience in leading a team and working in a multidisciplinary team atmosphere
- Strong attention to detail
- Knowledge of prototyping software and tools (Flash knowledge preferred)
